Stunt the growth of criminal minds!

We are all impressed with the dynamics of Guateng’s new lieutenant- general Mzwandile Petros, especially since there has been an actual increase in police visibility.

He has however acknowledged that the police can not see the murder, rape and assault that take place behind closed doors. This means that they need our eyes and ears.

Unfortuently, most of us are conditioned to look out for ourselves and not for others around us. In addition to forming neighborhood watches, which are worth their weight in gold, community involvement has to be taken to a personal level because getting to know your neighbors puts you in a better position to detect criminal activity within a household. It is our duty to assist the police by becoming more alert to what is happening around us.

The youth play the most fundamental role in creating a better society, hence it is of utmost importance that they are educated and encouraged to fight against crime. Many children are born into violent homes and are likely to continue the behavioral cycle of their parents. Schools should therefore instill proper moral and ethics into the hearts of students, using respected figures in the community to guide the youth, so as to radically prevent the development of young criminals.

People must realize that it is not just the cops who are responsible for creating a safe environment; it is the responsibility of each South African. Only when every ordinary citizen plays their part will this country reach its ideals.
